Why Am I Surprised?

Just when I thought I'd heard it all regarding the pragmatism and shallowness of evangelical churches in America...

A church outside of Dallas hosted a Sunday morning worship service/pep rally for the NBA Dallas Mavericks.

Nice...

"Inside the sanctuary...There are jersey giveaways and T-shirts flung to the crowd. Complimentary inflatable fingers are passed out with temporary tattoos, headbands and Thundersticks... Mavericks video clips and pre-game music intermingle with Scriptures and a sober sermon about compassion."

It's these kinds of stories that make folks like my father-in-law think that this is what "Contemporary Worship" is all about. There is NO Scripture calling us to bring the world into churches (God's presence, presumablly), but to bring God to the world. There's a huge difference. Relating to people where they are doesn't mean compromising the Message to enrobing it inside entertainment or pallatability, but to help folks see where they are in relationship to Christ.

Sad.
